The injuries resulted from an incident on Saturday, March 23, when two Port Chester Police officers began struggling with a 28-year-old man after telling him he was under arrest for shoplifting, the department said.
The struggle caused damage to several store displays and during the altercation, an officer was head-butted by the suspect. The other officer suffered an injury to his hand, according to police.
The officer who was head-butted suffered a "substantial" hematoma above his eye that required medical attention.
After the suspect's arrest, he damaged his holding cell by causing it to flood, police said. He was later arraigned and remanded to Westchester County Jail.
The name of the suspect and the location where the incident took place were not released by police. However, the department said they would increase police presence in the affected areas and continue to make arrests.
"There is an increasing trend with suspects traveling into the area to commit crimes such as the above," the department said, adding, "Unfortunately, actions like this suspect's are occurring more often and it is concerning."
